What Is Sports Psychology
A sports psychologist is an individual who is accredited in psychology, and specializes in counseling players, coaches, teams, and individual athletes in their respective sports. One who holds this title will analyze several sources of conflict, and will make recommendations based on the conflicts to the teams and players, in order to resolve issues that are present.
Whether the issues are on a team-basis, player level, or coaching level, the sports psychologist will analyze each prong, and offer the solutions appropriately. This career requires that the applicant is truly interested in sports, especially those on the team level, and they must also have the desire to help others succeed in their respective sports.
There are several different sports psychologist jobs available to applicants. One career option is clinical psychology. Here, the sports psychologist will counsel athletes, in order to help them identify and resolve problems which are related and unrelated to their performance in the sport they play.
The second option is applied sports psychology related jobs. These jobs require the psychologist to develop and implement incentive and motivational based performance programs, in order to enhance the performance for teams in general, as well as each individual player on the team, and each coach on the team.
This will improve the overall team quality, and the level of play on an individual level. The third option is to work in research settings, or to teach in academic institutions (generally college or university levels), which offer degree seekers the opportunity to get a degree in sports psychology. Those who enter into clinical or applied fields will generally work on any level, from high school, college, and even with professional teams, trying to improve team play.
Sports Psychologist Job Duties
The sports psychologist job also entails various duties, depending on which of the three fields they go in to. For clinical and applied fields, the psychologists will create programs, and several motivational tools will be used, in order to get players and teams to learn to work together.
They will also work one on one with players, on helping them improve their mentality, and helping them remove the road blocks which are hindering their performance.
Those psychologists, who go in to research or academic institutions, will be required to study how to teach students to manage the team. These psychologists will also do research in fields that go in to learning about a player’s state of mind, and what winning athletes versus losing athletes do in order to prepare for games and big competitions.
Sports Psychology Degree Requirements
A sports psychologist is required to earn a psychology masters program prior to entering the field on a professional level. The salary and types of careers that a sports psychologist goes in to, will vary upon which of the three fields they wish to practice in, and what kind of degree type they have earned.
Overall, these positions deal with working with teams and players, and getting in to the mindset of players (and coaches), to see what is required to help the teams improve performance, work together, and reach the highest levels of competition, in order to succeed in their sport.
